Karyn Oliver
Karyn Oliver has been turning heads on both sides of the Atlantic with her skillful songwriting and a passionate, soulful voice that could break your heart through a brick wall. Based in Baltimore, MD, she attracts fans of folk, blues, rock, and country with her memorable melodies, sophisticated arrangements, deeply personal lyrics, and vocal fireworks, all ably displayed on her brand new CD, Red Dress.
Produced by Thomm Jutz (Nanci Griffith) and featuring an all-star cast of experienced Nashville musicians, Red Dress shows Oliver at her sultriest (“Right Now”), bittersweetly melancholy (“Candy Dish”), and playfully flirtatious (“Baby Don’t Speak”). “October Day” transforms one woman’s story into a universal message about dreams that are lost and then recovered in an unexpected guise, while “June is Leaving” shows off Oliver’s gift for looking at the common through an uncommon and captivating eye.
Oliver’s Baltimore CD release event comes on the heels of a whirlwind tour of the UK and European continent, and her successful debut at Boston’s best-known folk venue, the venerable Club Passim. The house concert and party will feature a full band performance of music from Red Dress and from Oliver’s debut CD, 2007’s Hurricane, with Tony Calato on drums, Bill Patrick on bass, David Zee on keyboards, Sean P. Lally on guitar, and Kate Maguire and Claudia San Soucie on background vocals. Maguire and San Soucie’s duo, Beggars Ride, will open the show.
Oliver is an active contributor to the acoustic and Americana music scene in the Baltimore-DC area, as a past President and current board member of the Baltimore Songwriters’ Association, and the host of WLOY radio’s “The Mobtown Couch” since 2005. Oliver’s weekly radio show highlights singer-songwriters with a particular emphasis on homegrown Baltimore musicians. She has regular visitors performing, as well as doing some of her own live material each week.
Oliver’s music has been featured on radio stations in both the U.S. and Europe, including WLOY, WRYR, Radio Crystal Blue, Moray Firth Radio, The Upper Room with Joe Kelley, and Radio Parkstad. Oliver has also performed live on Maryland Public Television’s “MPT Artworks”, and Radio Midvliet in Den Haag. Executives from Sennheiser were so impressed with the quality of her voice that they requested permission to use tracks from Hurricane to demonstrate the quality of Neumann recording microphones.
